Closing the Manufacturing Talent Gap - From the Ground Up

Across the U.S., advanced manufacturing is facing a critical challenge: a growing talent shortage. According to the latest iCIMS Workforce Report, manufacturing job openings rose 14% year-over-year, while hires declined by 7%, indicating that demand is outpacing supply. Why? Retirements, shrinking vocational pipelines, and outdated perceptions of manufacturing are all contributing factors.

At the same time, the sector is undergoing rapid evolution. Automation, AI, and smart production aren’t replacing jobs; they’re reshaping them. Today’s advanced manufacturing roles demand a new kind of expertise, one that blends technical skill with digital fluency, adaptability, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

That’s why AMICSTL is building something different. We believe the solution starts with a connection between education and industry, training and opportunity, potential and purpose. We’re working to align programs with real-world demand, expand access, and prepare a workforce that’s ready to lead.

AMICSTL is building its role as a workforce integrator by bringing employers, educators, and training partners together to better align skills with industry demand. From hands-on initiatives such as Advanced Manufacturing Exploration Days and partnering with Project MFG for advanced manufacturing competitions, to growing our network of high school and college partnerships, we’re helping learners explore advanced manufacturing early and equipping them with the skills to thrive in a modern, tech-driven economy.

We’re not just preparing workers for today. We’re working to build a talent pipeline that fuels innovation, strengthens regional competitiveness, and drives prosperity across Missouri, Illinois, and the nation.

The gap is national. The solution starts local. AMICSTL is building it.
